Runners For RunnersSometimes the best advice comes from a community of your peers.
October 1, 2007
For the first time ever, Sprint has gone outside of their in–house design team and called upon GeekPAK and 426 Inc. to build a community website for the Chicago Marathon. With future marathons and distance events in mind, GeekPAK's task was to build a community website that was adaptable for other cities. With adrenaline fueled minds, and some inspiration from their marathon friends, GeekPAK began to “sprint ahead” on the project.
GeekPAK designed Sprint a brand compliant community web site to prepare Chicago Marathon runners for the big day. A section with course tips, including neighborhood attractions to watch out for, informed runners of the unique Chicago terrain. A Virtual Training section complete with tips from Coach Bill Leach highlights educational running tips including running posture and recovery techniques. Runners also had the chance to offer their own advice to other marathon participants through the “Running Buddy Advice” postings. Rounding out the website's bag of tricks was the mobility tools sections. Here, runners could purchase gear and learn how to monitor their status during the race using their cell phones.
Understanding that runners like to use multipurpose equipment, GeekPAK made sure the website was compatible with most mobile phone browsers. This allowed athletes to visit the website, on or after race day, while on the go using their mobile phones. This conscious effort proved to be beneficial when stats came back showing more mobile phone page views than a typical site would receive.
At the finish line, Sprint was very pleased with the results. GeekPAK has already begun to warm up for their next marathon.
